Acting a Song

Tony Award winner Michael Rupert, best known as the originator of the
role of Marvin in William Finn's Falsettos musicals, teaches this
important musical theater class. People who think of themselves as
singers don't tend to spend enough time on the acting that goes on in a
song, and people who think of themselves as actors often assume that
musical roles are not open to them.
Our Acting a Song course corrects these imbalances. All singers who
act and actors who carry a tune can improve their performance (of their
chances of getting cast) in musicals by learning ways to interpret a
lyric, make the most of musical phrasing, and connect to the person the
song is being sung to. Michael comes to this course with a unique
perspective, as a composer and lyricist of award-winning musicals as
well as one of Broadway's most accomplished performers.
You don't have to sing a note to learn something about acting. This
affordable one-night class will explore the link between monologues and
songs, to see what straight actors and musical theatre performers might
be able to learn from each other. Michael brings a wealth of musical and
non-musical experience, as well as a genial personality, to this
intensive three hours. Prepare a monologue or song to work on in front
of the group, or just watch and learn.
